Born on March 4, 1961 in the town of Isperih, he graduated from the Philip Kutev National School of Folk Arts in Kotel and then the Plovdiv Academy of Music, Dance and Fine Arts. Theodosii Spassov developed his own unique playing style. His performances are an unusual synthesis of traditional folklore, jazz and classical music. In the recent years he has been busy composing scores for film and theatre, as well as music for symphonic orchestra and kaval. Café Balkan joins forces with Theodosii Spassov for a musical journey that traces people, places and memories from the ports of the Mediterranean to the mountain passes of the Balkans.

Melodies poised between tradition
and contemporary expression, rhythms that shift as effortlessly as musicians cross borders, and sounds that tell stories shared across cultures despite their differences.

Bringing together musicians shaped by diverse cultural traditions, the
ensemble reflects a shared quest for universal values that transcend time
and national boundaries, addressing themes such as exile, migration and
displacement.

Through an ongoing creative dialogue, these outstanding musicians
paint a series of musical portraits, each contributing a distinctive artistic
voice.

Balancing tradition with contemporary expression, they seek to forge a personal musical language through original compositions and traditional melodies from the Mediterranean and the Balkan Peninsula.

Every piece is a portrait. Every portrait tells a story. Every story becomes
a bridge between cultures.

DUO HOJSAK&NOVOSEL & THEODOSII SPASSOV - 51ST OSOR MUSICAL EVENINGS

Lokacija: Osor,ex Cathedral
Time: 23.8.2026., at 9 p.m.

Tihomir Hojsak (double bass) and Filip Novosel (tambura) have long been recognized as two outstanding instrumentalists. Beyond their virtuosity, they compose original music rooted in Croatian tradition and perform it on stages across the globe. They have also collaborated with one of Bulgaria’s greatest musicians, Theodosii Spassov. A renowned *kaval* player, vocalist, composer, and artist, Spassov has received numerous accolades, most notably a Grammy Award for his collaboration with the Sofia Women's Radio Choir. *Newsweek* magazine has hailed him as one of the most talented musicians in Eastern Europe, noting that he has "invented a completely new musical genre." Through his virtuosic *kaval* (a type of Bulgarian flute) playing, Spassov fuses Bulgarian tradition with jazz—incorporating influences from classical music as well as the traditions of other cultures and nations—much like Hojsak and Novosel skillfully do with the *tambura* and double bass. Their open-air performance in the central square of Osor will mark the conclusion of the festival's 51st edition.
